Questions

How do I bring my Anki decks into Franki?

In Anki, export the deck as an .apkg file with “Support older Anki versions” ticked. Then open the file in Franki from Files, Mail or AirDrop, or use Choose File in Import.

Franki keeps each card's scheduling and review history, its first picture and sound per side, reversed and cloze cards, tags, flags and suspensions. Importing the same file again adds nothing twice.

Can I import from a list or a spreadsheet?

Yes. You can paste a list, or import CSV files and Anki text exports.

How does iCloud sync work?

Decks, cards, images and review history sync through your private iCloud database, so they follow you to a new phone and to iPad. Sync needs no sign-in: it uses the Apple Account you're already signed in with.

Why can't I make cards with AI?

Making cards with AI uses Apple Intelligence on the device, so it needs an iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on. Without it, Generate explains why it's unavailable.

Everything else in Franki works on any iPhone with iOS 26 or later (iPhone 11 and later). Question banks from a PDF, such as past papers with numbered multiple-choice questions and answers, don't need Apple Intelligence.

What are the starter decks?

Franki comes with 90 ready-made decks, 60,006 cards in all: core words in 16 languages (and English for speakers of 16 languages), Japanese kana and kanji, and facts from science, geography, health, maths and more. They ship inside the app, so they work offline.

Pick some when you first open Franki, or add more any time from Decks → + → Starter Decks. Decks no native speaker has read yet are marked Beta. When a deck is updated, its cards change without touching your progress, your edits or cards you deleted. Sources are credited in Settings → Acknowledgements.

How do I back up or export my cards?

Franki can make a full backup that you can restore later, and export your cards as CSV.

Does Franki cost anything?

Franki is free, with no ads and no sign-up. Making cards on your iPhone with Apple Intelligence is free too.

The one paid feature is Franki Cloud, which is optional: pick PDF pages and Claude, by Anthropic, makes the cards. It needs Sign in with Apple and runs on credits.

What is a credit?

One credit makes cards from one PDF page in Franki Cloud. Credits are bought in the app through Apple: 100 for $0.99, 600 for $4.99, 1,300 for $9.99 or 3,000 for $19.99 (US prices; other countries see the App Store equivalent).

Credits never expire. They belong to your Sign in with Apple account and can't be transferred or cashed out.

Do I get free credits?

Yes. Every account starts with 300 free credits, enough for 300 pages.

What if an import fails?

You're charged only when cards are made. If Claude fails or makes no cards, no credits are used.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

How Franki handles your data is in the privacy policy. The rules for using it, including credits, are in the terms of use.
